The New York Yankees achieved last Monday their fourth victory in a row and eight in nine games after winning the game against the Seattle Mariners 4 - 2. New York remains a half-game behind Boston who occupies the first place in the American League Eastern Division.
During the Yankees game, Jason Giambi hit his 28th homerun of the season, Chien-Ming Wang picked up his 10th win giving up two runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. Mariano Rivera recorded his 401st career save. Miguel Cairo's two-run single highlighted a three-run second inning and the New York's center fielder Johnny Damon went 3-for-4 with a run driven in for the Yankees.
For Seattle Mariners Raul Ibanez accomplished a run batted in (RBI) and scored a run. Kenji Johjima scored a couple of hits and an RBI. The Mariners have lost nine of their last eleven games. Jarrod Washburn, who is winless in his last six starts, was disappointed with the loss, after yielding four runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Red Sox (55-36) beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 at Fenway Park on Monday after trailing 4-0 in the seventh inning. Doug Mirabelli hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox. This is just the second victory for the Red Sox in the past six games.
Toronto Blue Jays player Vernon Wells hit a grand slam in a nine-run fourth
inning as Toronto defeated Texas 10-1 last Monday.
Baltimore beat Oakland 5-3, Minnesota downed Tampa Bay 6-3 and the Los Angeles Angels won over Cleveland 10-5. In other games Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 15-3 ending the Cardinals' seven-game winning streak. Brian McCann hit a grand slam and Wilson Betemit went 4-for-6 with a homer and five runs batted in for Atlanta, who has won a season-best six straight games.
Atlanta Braves is in second place in the National League East, 11 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Mets, who were off yesterday.
Chipper Jones had three singles for the Braves. This is the first time in 15 games he didn't have an extra-base hit. His streak of 14 games with a double, triple or homer had tied the MLB record established by Pittsburgh's Paul Waner in 1927.
Results in other National League games are: Florida topped Washington 4-2, Pittsburgh beat Colorado 3-1, Arizona defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3, the Philadelphia Phillies dropped to third after an 8-6 loss to the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee won over San Francisco 10-1.

College football has been called a pure game. The players are out there on the field playing for glory and school pride. They don�t get paid and many of them are hoping to get a shot at the NFL. College football has no salary cap and there's nothing stopping a school from signing many top recruits in the country. As a result good schools get better and poor schools get worse.

As a result, the points can really add up. One trap that many college football bettors that also bet the NFL fall into is handicapping the game as if it was the NFL. In the NFL, each and every player no matter how bad they seem is one of the top players in the entire football world. In college football, there are handfuls of NFL type players with scores of just average players.

It�s all about March Madness. The rush of excitement. The thrill of victory. The crushing agony of defeat. However, first teams must play out a full season before being selected. In the grand scheme of things, only a handful of the college teams are selected to the big dance. Most get there by winning their conference or the championship tournament for their conference. I bring this up, because it's important to know. A successful sports bettor needs to know what teams are motivated and what teams are just going through the motions.
It would be a grave mistake to assume that a team with an average record is playing for nothing. Many teams play hard throughout the season, because they have a shot at the NCAA tournament even if they are low in the conference. Another fallacy that kills sports bettors is betting NCAA basketball like it's the NBA. You have to remember that NCAA basketball is comprised of young adults, typically 18-21. Most don�t possess the ability to perform at a high level, to think under pressure and to rise to the occasion against all odds.
While colleges fill their basketball teams with the best talent they have available, that does not mean the team will have even one really good player. Some programs out there are just plain bad. Only a small sample of players at the college level will be drafted by the NBA. Most are just street balers going through their college years. College basketball players are more susceptible to emotional swings than NBA players. For this reason, you must pay attention to any recent news and events swirling around the team.
For those that don't already know, college basketball works on the spread system. For example, let's say you have UCLA
playing at Duke and Duke is -8. You have two options. You can take Duke and lay the 8 points, which means Duke must win by more than 8 for you to win�8 is a tie and only wins on some parlay cards. Your other option is to take UCLA and the 8 points. As long as UCLA win or does not lose by more than 7, you win. If they lose by 8, you tie.

The totals line is the total number of points scored by both participants at an event. For example, if the totals line was 130, you could bet the over or the under. Dwight Smith was released by the New Orleans Saints last Thursday and he will probably start with another team by the end of this week: the Minnesota Vikings. Apparently he has been meeting with this team's coaches and officials since last Monday.
Minnesota already has a Pro Bowl free safety: Darren Sharper, who is a nine-year veteran and has registered nine interceptions in 2005, but the team seems prepared to make accommodations to fit Smith into the lineup. If Smith is acquired, Sharper might move to strong safety in the cover two scheme, allowing him to play closer to the line of scrimmage on occasion.
Adding the five year veteran to the Vikings draft would provide Minnesota with a pair of safeties in the scheme that Tomlin established in the off-season, and more support to the standout cornerbacks Antoine Winfield and Fred Smoot.
The Vikings have signed the former Tennessee Titans starting strong safety Tank Williams as an unrestricted free agent and he and the four-year veteran Willie Offord appeared to be ready to compete for the starting job there. Acquiring Smith might change that.

Schumacher Wins The German Grand Prix againBy Julie Smith
Schumacher won the Formula One race at Hockenheim, Germany. This represents his fourth victory in the German Grand Prix, the fifth triumph this season and third one in a row. This one is also, Schumacher's 70th victory for the team Ferrari and 100th for the team Bridgestone, which is his tire provider.
Schumacher's teammate, Felipe Massa, kept the pace about 2.5 seconds of him throughout the race, and finished only 0.7 seconds behind. Massa moved into third place in the drivers' series with 50 points, one point ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Kimi Raikkonen, both of them have 49 points. This was the second time Massa finishes in second position in his career.
Schumacher's victory and Massa's second place locate the team Ferrari to 10 points from Renault for the lead in the constructors' series, which Renault leads with 149 points, since this is Ferrari's second 1-2 finish of the season.
Raikkonen who ended up third declared he didn't do that well on this race due to his car experienced some technical problems like: a crossed
wheel nut, blistered tires and some kind of issue with the hydraulics.
Schumacher took the lead after Raikkonen pulled off for his first pit stop on the 10th lap and the German never let it go, even through his own pit stops on the 20th and 45th lap.
A difficult race with a hot weather, it was ran under hot skies, reaching 34-degree Celsius (93 Fahrenheit) air temperature and a 50-degree (122 Fahrenheit) track, in the last 10 of the 67-laps. Mark Webber who races for Williams, with eight laps left, abruptly slowed and dropped out of the race from fifth position and his engine caught fire just as he entered the pit lane, apparently because of a water leak which is critical for an engine. Of the 22 cars that were participating of the race eight couldn't finish either because of accidents or breakdowns.

Jeff Posey Released By The Bills

Jeff Posey, the linebacker who started 47 games during the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills was released on Monday, five days before their preseason opener.
Posey, who is a nine year veteran and will turn 31 years old next Monday, recorded 68 tackles and three sacks last season. He signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills in February of 2003. Posey set career highs with 71 tackles and eight sacks in 2002 with Houston.
Posey's release was expected in a certain way since he was relegated during spring mini-camps following Crowell's emergence. Posey's practice time remained limited during the first nine days of camp.
Apparently Buffalo's new coach: Dick Jauron will use Angelo Crowell or Mario Haggan at the strongside linebacker position. Crowell demonstrated he was capable of being a starter last season, when he had the chance to fill in at middle linebacker Takeo Spikes. T. Spikes who is a two-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a torn Achilles tendon and he was forced to miss the final 13 games.
With Spikes ready to return, Crowell remained in the starting mix alongside middle linebacker

Jeff Posey, the linebacker who started 47 games during the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills was released on Monday, five days before their preseason opener.
Posey, who is a nine year veteran and will turn 31 years old next Monday, recorded 68 tackles and three sacks last season. He signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills in February of 2003. Posey set career highs with 71 tackles and eight sacks in 2002 with Houston.
Posey's release was expected in a certain way since he was relegated during spring mini-camps following Crowell's emergence. Posey's practice time remained limited during the first nine days of camp.
Apparently Buffalo's new coach: Dick Jauron will use Angelo Crowell or Mario Haggan at the strongside linebacker position. Crowell demonstrated he was capable of being a starter last season, when he had the chance to fill in at middle linebacker Takeo Spikes. T. Spikes who is a two-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a torn Achilles tendon and he was forced to miss the final 13 games.

Baseball: Pedro Martinez Suffered Another InjuryBy Julie Smith
Pedro Martinez went back to New York on Monday night for some medical tests after he suffered his second injury in the last two months. This time the diagnosis was a strained right calf that occurred during the warm up in the bullpen. But he still pitched and was tagged for six runs in just one ugly inning in the game where the New York Mets were defeated by the Phillies with a final score of 13-0.
Martinez had iced down his right calf following his Aug. 3 start in Miami. He was listed as day-to-day pending Tuesday's examination by the team's physician in New York. The other injury Martinez experienced this season was an inflamed hip. This was also originally deemed minor, but he spent most of July on the disabled list.
Martinez's injury will add a lot of emotion and suspense to the final seven weeks of the regular season since the Mets actually know they will have problems translating their runaway lead in the division into a world championship without Martinez, a three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Martinez's
fastball barely topped 80 mph due to an inability to push off with his right leg. He was flagged for a balk by first base umpire Eric Cooper to force home the run that made it 3-0. Martinez promptly clipped Chris Coste on the left elbow to reload the bases, before Abraham Nunez cleared them with a three-run double that skipped past Carlos Beltran.
Martinez's injury marked the second shortest outing of his career; he was knocked out after two-thirds of an inning on June 20, 1995, with Montreal against Houston. It also marked the first time in 372 career starts that Martinez had allowed six first-inning runs.
Martinez wanted to remain in the game, but the team's coach and training staff saw, there was something wrong with him, and they wouldn't let him stay out in the field.

He used to be part of this beautiful sport as he used to be a quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. But these two brothers play for different teams: Peyton plays for the Indianapolis Colts and Eli, who is the younger brother plays for the New York Giants.
These two quarterbacks had to play face to face last Sunday, when the Indianapolis Colts visited the New York Giants in an inter-conference battle.
Peyton is a two-time NFL MVP and a six-time Pro Bowler. Last season he threw for 3,747 yards and 28 touchdowns with just 10 interceptions for a rating of 104.1. It was certainly a failure and we all accept our blame for that, but it was nothing more than that. It wasn't a lack of effort, like I've heard people saying. That's an injustice."
Ronaldo is confident on getting back his starter spot with Real Madrid: "I made a bet with Roberto Carlos and the president of the club that I would score 30 goals this season and I expect to win," he said.

Washington Nationals Manager Happy With His Retirement

Frank Robinson was not upset at all when he received the news that he was going to be separated from the Nationals manager seat.
After a 51-year career and possibly with a culmination in the Hall of Famer�s, Robinson was told during the week that he will not return to the team for the next season, but the news were not official until Saturday, just before the game against the Mets.
"It's been a good ride for me. It's been 51 years. And the old saying is, 'When you take a manager's job, stay around long enough -- you are going to be fired.' It's been a great run for me, and I mean that sincerely, I have no bitter feelings or anything like that about the situation." Mr. Robinson said.
It is a usual thing in baseball to announce his departure to a manager a day or two after the end of the season, but Robinson asked for an earlier announcement in case he got fired, so he have a chance to say goodbye.
Stan Kasten, the president of the Washington Nationals referred to the situation:"It's, I hope, a reflection of our great depth of personal feeling we have for Frank and the respect we have for Frank," he said.
In 16 seasons as manager for four different teams, Mr. Robinson
never achieved the success he obtained as a power-hitting outfielder who ranks sixth in major league history with 586 home runs.
He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1956, the NL MVP in 1961 and the AL MVP in 1966, when he won the Triple Crown, he also was the first black manager in MBL history when acting as a player-manager for the Cleveland Indians in 1975.
On April 20, Robinson became the 53rd manager with 1,000 victories. But his overall record is 1,065-1,086 with no postseason appearances.
"I feel a little bit sad by it, because I feel he's a solid baseball man and he should be in the game, you feel bad for the fact that he's going to have to regroup and look for another job. Hopefully he'll land on his feet. I've got a lot of respect for the man. He's a tremendous baseball man and he's helped me a lot." Mets manager Willie Randolph said.
On Saturday, Robinson gathered with players and couching staff to inform the news. General manager Jim Bowden said that the search for the new manager would begin on Monday, October the 2nd.

Venus Williams had to withdraw from the Proximus Diamond Games that are taking place in Antwerp, Belgium. According to the notorious athlete, she has been suffering too much due to a wrist injury. However she expects to make a comeback to the tour in Memphis.
Venus had to win the tournament three times within five years to be able to claim the golden diamond racket. This year was her last chance to make it. But as a result of her retirement from the tournament, Amelie Mauresmo will be the only one that could claim this award. This could happen if the Frenchwoman wins the Diamond Games for the third time. This means this year (2007), 2008 or 2009 since she already achieved this goal in 2005 and in 2006.
Venus Williams manager announced that the tennis player wouldn't stay to the end of this tournament and although she has been practicing, she is not ready yet to play a complete match.
According to the organization, Williams will be fined for withdrawing from the tournament with such short notice. This made the organizers run in order to get another star with a big name to replace Venus. The Belgian organization contacted other two known girls in the tennis tournaments world: Kuznetsova and Vaidisova but they were both committed with other events.
This professional event takes place since 2002. The tournament has been taking place in the Sportpaleis, Antwerp and is held at the beginning of February.
